“Founders always remember to ask, ‘who wrote this rule and why?’ Many ‘rules’ within the game weren’t written with you in mind so following them to be safe is sometimes the most risky thing you can do. Our work is to find what’s next not to replay what is anyway. Write new rules. Success in business is found in challenging the status quo. Sounds simple? Most won’t get there. Many will never have the audacity to believe they are as capable of changing the game as anyone else. The first step in shifting the culture is believing you can. The second step is studying the current rules of the game. Real study. Learn who wrote the current rules and why. A lot of times you’ll find the reasons weren’t that deep and the people behind them not that sophisticated. You’ve got the same potential. You’ll also see that a lot of times the current rules weren’t designed to serve your community or culture. Build your company in a way that is authentic to you. That’s what the previous folk did. Most existing standards are just some previous persons preferences. Give us yours. That isn’t to say just break the rules for the sake of it. Some rules make sense. But if you are going to innovate you have to stay in constant question of anyone or anything that tells you to do something ‘because that’s how we do things.’ Who is ‘we’ anyway? At the end of the day, success as a founder requires you to shift existing baselines. People won’t believe you but that’s the point. You see something they can’t.
