Nothing wrong with some technical assistance and a good mentor for those that need it but we have to stop believing the lie that the main issue is a knowledge gap when it really is about capital. The truth about entrepreneurship is that nobody knows what they are doing. Sure, there are best practices and skills you can learn but if you aren’t careful these folks will have you out here believing you are disproportionately more dumb than everyone else. That is why most of the racial equity commitments center around ‘training.’ It is much easier to embrace the racist trope that Black entrepreneurs are unknowledagble than it is to acknowledge that the real issue is that we don’t and haven’t gotten access to the bag. We are in so deep that even Black folks will fight for these 101 level programs instead of access to meaningful capital. If we are going to grow and scale companies, we need cash to do it not [a] bunch of programs explaining the basics of what a business plan is. Besides, once I take your education course if I can’t get access to cash what is the point? I don’t want to window shop; I want to buy some clothes! Nice ones too! We deserve a shot to fail forward, often or whatever that phrase is y’all say. That fail forward stuff is silly. If you don’t have any money, you don’t have room for much risk or to fail. Cash gives you space to experiment. We don’t ever get to this though because we spend our time convincing our best and brightest they need to keep taking the 101 class.” ~Ryan Wilson :: We appreciate your readership.
