“I can’t explain the frustration or better yet the embarrassment I feel after becoming so scared and anxious just because a cop car pulls up behind me or beside me. I’m doing absolutely nothing wrong, but that fear hits like a ton of bricks every time…The crazy part is, I’m not writing this because of current events. This is a fear instilled in me as a teenager. And once again moment[s] ago, I felt that same fear as 2 cops pulled up on my rear fast and tailgate me to try and get me to speed up so they could pull me over. How did I know that’s what they were doing? Because I’ve had it happen to me before and then had the police officer lie in court about it when I was powerless to do or say anything. And that’s why I feel so frustrated because I’m powerless. That fear of losing your life at the hands of people who swear to protect it. And knowing that not only am I powerless, but so is my family, friend, and community. And embarrassed that as a grown ass man I’m so scared I have panic attacks just from a cop car pulling behind me. The second time in my life I was called the N-word, was by a cop. The first time I was held up at gun point, was by a cop. The only time I’ve have my jaw broken, was by a cop. I’ve felt violated because I was being ‘searched’ for no reason by cops and that was all before I was 17. I’ve talked about this in the past but I am sick and tired of living scared when I know I’m not even doing anything besides being Black. But my country doesn’t care about Black bodies. There is no answers and so I will either live with this fear the rest of my life or just be ok with the fact that any time a police officer is around I could be killed and all I can do is [chalk] it up to the game.
